Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased concentration of glucose in the blood due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. After digestion, glucose is absorbed into blood stream where cells use it for energy and growth. Insulin is required by the cells to utilize the glucose in the body. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas.

Type I Diabetes Mellitus (Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus)

It can occur at any age and commonly occurs in younger age. It occurs due to absence or deficiency of insulin.

Type II Diabetes Mellitus (Non-insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus)

This disease more commonly occurs after the age of 40. Insulin hormone is normal or above normal levels.

Type III Diabetes Mellitus (Gestational Diabetes)
